About me

Joseph Hebert, a versatile cellist based in the vibrant San Francisco Bay area, is not only a talented musician but also an accomplished choral director and dedicated educator. He has had the incredible opportunity to tour extensively across the United States, Japan, Africa, and Europe, sharing his passion for both classical music and improvisational styles with diverse audiences. Throughout his distinguished career, he has had the privilege of sharing the concert stage and recording studio with a myriad of renowned artists, including the legendary Carlos Santana, the iconic Stevie Wonder, and the esteemed John Batiste at Carnegie Hall, as well as, more recently, with Stanley Clarke. In addition to his performing accomplishments, he is a voting member of the Grammy Recording Academy and has contributed to both Grammy award-winning and nominated recordings. Critics have praised him as “one of the most eloquently expressive cellists in the San Francisco Bay Area,” a testament to his skill and artistry.

Currently, Mr. Hébert holds the position of Assistant Principal Cello with the Oakland Symphony. He has made contributions to recordings, like the Grammy-nominated CD compilation titled John Williams: The Star Wars Trilogy with the Skywalker Symphony, and the Grammy-winning song "Maria Maria" by Carlos Santana from the acclaimed Supernatural CD. The publication Wine and Wire aptly described Joseph Hébert as “one of the most versatile cellists around, highlighting his ability to play pizzicato on some tracks, which creates a sound reminiscent of a bass, followed by soaring melodies using full bowed classical techniques”.

As an accomplished choral director, Joseph has traveled to Europe with his choirs and cello for various performance tours, in Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Ireland and even at invitational performances in the Vatican. For over 15 years, Mr. Hébert served as a cello instructor for the Young Musicians Program at the University of California, Berkeley, where he also took on the roles of coach for string ensembles and conductor of both a string orchestra and multiple choruses, including a robust 100-voice choir. Currently, Joseph Hébert is a member of the faculty at Cal State University East Bay, where he serves as a lecturer, cello instructor, and String Ensemble Director, continuing to inspire and educate the next generation of musicians.
